The timeline for the pilot project is through December 2017, end date is December 31, 2017. The partners on this project are UWM (Inclusive Excellence Center, Student Success Center, and Cultures and Communities Certificate Program). The grant is from the Burke Foundation with an opportunity to renew, sub-partners are Burke Foundation-funded College Preparatory programs such as Boys and Girls Club, PEARLS for Teen Girls, and Carmen High School for Science and Technology. The focus of the program is on students new traditional age students, 17y.o.+ soon-to-be first-year students. The first cohort is here at UWM as 2nd semester first-year students, we are recruiting for the second cohort.

Pulled directly from the grant documents:

    ·         “The grant is designed to increase college support and success for students entering UWM through Burke Foundation funded pre-college program.”

    ·         The grant partnership…includes but is not limited to: 1) Summer Bridge program, 2) establishment of a learning community for MKE Scholars in the Cultures and Community curriculum, 3) special services tailored for MKE Scholars including pre-enrollment services, 4) a full-time college coach dedicated to UWM students in the MKE Scholars’ cohort, 5) assignment of a peer mentor for all MKE Scholars”

The results (chart attached) the team is tracking are on the quantitative front, I am seeking exploration on the qualitative front and insight of Scholars’ experience thus far. It would be exceptional if the students could be involved in all aspects of the evaluation; think CBPR. If you have further questions, please let me know as I am the lead PI for this project.

UWM’s contribution includes scholarship dollars, funding and staffing from the UWM Student Success Center, as well as funding and staffing from the Inclusive Excellence Center.
